To our neighbours

We have put on hold the plan to sell the Ambassador’s Residence, for now. As a result, we have started interior renovations of the house at 2 Simtat Hamaalot.      a

Some of the original problems which prompted our decision to consider moving will now hopefully be rectified by teams of builders – including dampness; a leaking roof; crumbling walls; out-dated electrics. But there are other problems which we cannot rectify so easily – lack of available street parking; difficult access to the streets; space for only ‘one direction’ driving.     a

The Ambassador’s Residence is a beautiful property and I, together with my wife Celia and my daughter Rachel, are privileged to live here. But the property is maintained at great expense for the real purpose of entertaining. Functions held at the Residence are not simply ‘social get-togethers’ of our friends but representational events supporting and promoting ideas and organizations that are important to both Britain and Israel. Without this entertaining there is no need for 2 Simtat Hamaalot.       a

I understand the additional demands for parking from our guests is frustrating for our neighbours. However, if the British Embassy is to remain as a presence in Gan Hakofim we should try to work together with the Ramat Gan Municipality to see if we can minimize some of the issues. I would be delighted to hear any ideas The Neighbours’ Committee has.     a

Meanwhile, I would like to take this opportunity to inform our neighbours that we will be celebrating The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on the evening of Tuesday 5th June. There will be many VIP guests with accompanying security. Together with my staff, I apologise in advance for the inconvenience I know you will be caused. I can only ask for your patience and understanding in dealing with the large number of people who will come as guests to our neighborhood on that evening.       a
